The immersive value of CBSE approach

What makes the CBSE approach unique is the scale of its objective –common educational quality for students of India, across geographies. The CBSE has been in existence for 90 years, and therefore the curriculum itself has been evolved to meet with the needs of the time.

India with its vast geography faces a unique challenge in balancing diversity and unity in education. CBSE, with its common minimum curriculum, infrastructural requirements, and quality standards, navigates this delicate balance. Challenges include pedagogic unity, technological adoption, teacher capacity building, integrating arts and sports, environmental concerns, and future skills. CBSE evolves from rote to experiential learning, adopts technology, upgrades teacher skills, integrates arts and sports, and promotes life skills and environmental conservation. As a result, the syllabus is constantly updated, to prepare students for the future with subjects like ICT and Artificial Intelligence.

Delhi Public School Warangal stands out by integrating the CBSE curriculum with exceptional finesse. Unlike rigid, one-size-fits-all approaches, DPS Warangal tailors the CBSE curriculum to suit its students, ensuring a top-notch education. DPS Warangal’s Secret Sauce: NCERT Curriculum

The strength of the CBSE governing system lies in its association with the NCERT curriculum, ensuring constant updates. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) play vital roles in the Indian education system, each with distinct responsibilities.

CBSE is a national educational board overseeing both public and private schools, under the governance of the Union Government of India. It conducts examinations for classes 10 and 12, known as the All India Secondary School Examination and All India Senior School Certificate Examination. CBSE sets a common curriculum, prescribes textbooks, conducts exams, and offers support for enhancing school education quality. While following the NCERT curriculum, CBSE schools may also incorporate extra subjects and content.

NCERT operates independently under the Indian Government, focusing on publishing textbooks, formulating educational policies, and executing research and training initiatives. It serves as a research and development entity in school education, providing guidance and technical aid to educational authorities at state and central levels. NCERT is responsible for designing the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) and syllabi for different school education levels. NCERT textbooks are widely utilized in CBSE schools and other affiliated educational institutions.

How grading and evaluation is done as per CBSE ?

As per CBSE, the curriculum for learning is divided into four levels i.e. primary school, middle school, secondary school and senior secondary school, where in primary refers to classes I to V, middle school refers to VI-VII, secondary refers to IX and X and senior secondary refers to classes XI and XII.

From class I and II, students have no formal assessment as such, and are evaluated continuously through the academic period. Teachers observe, document, diagnose, and provide feedback for students. Progress is recorded and shared regularly with the parents. The Performance Profile records each student’s development using emoticons.

The pedagogy during these formative years is divided into two sections or streams of learning: scholastic and co-scholastic subjects. While the scholastic section is focused on learning traditional topics such as English, Mathematics, Environment, the co-scholastics section consists of subjects on Visual and Performing Arts, Physical education,  Information and Communication Technology (ICT), SEWA (Social Empowerment through Work and Action), and  Life skills.

For kids in classes III to V, evaluations are done using six parts or sections, comprising four formative and two summative assessments. Formative assessment is a part of the instructional process, underpinning the importance of student involvement, wherein teachers can also consult with parents. These may include asking a student to demonstrate their learning through a variety of tools such as quizzes, test projects, or a group project. Through the academic year, formative tests are conducted with the goal of monitoring the class’s progress and giving feedback on where to improve. The summative assessment is a formal test which is aimed at defining how well a student has understood specific subjects, against an evaluation framework, or benchmark.

The summative assessments, therefore, are conducted at the end of each semester to evaluate students’ overall understanding and mastery of the subjects. This ensures that a student is meeting the learning objectives of each class, and is also able to improve in areas where they’re struggling.

Teachers use a variety of assessment methods, such as quizzes, tests, projects, and presentations, to gauge students’ knowledge and skills. This diverse approach to assessment allows for a robust evaluation of students’ learning abilities and helps cater to different learning styles. By providing regular feedback and guidance based on these assessments, teachers can support students in their academic growth and help them achieve their full potential.

The assessments also serve as a way for teachers to identify areas where kids are struggling and need additional support. By looking at the test results, teachers then tailor instruction to address specific needs and help their students overcome challenges they are experiencing in absorbing content. This personalized approach to teaching and learning creates a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed.

For students in Class VI to Class IX onwards, CBSE’s guidelines on grading are as per RTE Act, i.e to ensure each child is able to receive education until age 14. This is done in two terms for the scholastic section of assessment. Each term, or semester has a 100 marks weightage, wherein 80% is assigned to term exams, while 20% is assigned to continuous learning.

Therefore the grading is done in the following manner: for each 10 point increment in grade, the grade system follows a scale of A1, where in A1 represents the highest grade for a marks range of 91-100. Similarly, A2 represents the lower grade, for marks 81-90. A grade of E indicates a score of 32 and below, which means the student needs improvement, until the class VIII. This grade is considered a fail mark for students in Class IX.
