How can parents support pre-teens in exploring their interests?

As parents, we have a big role in young people’s lives, during the years when they turn into teenagers. Kids at this age are full of questions and possibilities, and keen to find out what interests them most. However, they often need help in exploring their interests and talents. Celebrate curiosity and eagerness for knowledge in your home environment. Invite children at home to explore different disciplines like the natural sciences, art, history, sports, and so on. This way they can find out by themselves what makes them spark. Let students work on projects connected to things they are keen on. Letting those do that will help you witness firsthand what they are passionate about.

1. Encouraging a curious spirit –

Parents can help kids aged 10 through 12 find stuff they care about by bringing various trades and activities during conversation or interaction. Place emphasis on play and creativity in your home or surrounding atmosphere and celebrate the interest and questioning demonstrated with challenges. Always urge teenagers to explore whatever: history, sporting activities, science, art, and so on.

Create jobs or tasks that can help find a way out, from the boring lifestyle for teenagers. Programs do not require being informative to meet their ultimate aim, and on top of that, they need materials that support things that they take a lot of delight out of.

2. Provide diverse opportunities –

Teenagers need to have many life experiences to find out where their specific abilities lie.  As a parent, it is important to make sure you organise different varieties of programs which will be beneficial for their future so that these kids can discover their potential. As an example, there are sports and cultural clubs, also for extracurricular programming, inviting friends or family members to home who can help them learn life skills such as sculptors, painters, dancers, gym trainers and other professions.

Parents can put their teenage children into local drama clubs. The club might think about bringing in accomplished speakers with several gigs such as – clowns, puppeteers, cultural artists etc. Some teenagers may not have been given the chance to do a fine art crayon drawing during their childhood; this is an opportunity to help get that achievement added to their list.

3. Foster a growth mindset –

Teaching teenagers about having a growth mentality can have an enormous effect on the way they pursue their passion projects. When teenagers are instructed to think in this way, they begin to view challenges as opportunities for growth and not as roadblocks. Tell them that their abilities and talents are not set, but rather can grow over time as a result of hard work, learning, dedication, and coping with setbacks. As parents, highlight some of the famous personalities that have succeeded in their fields after overcoming barriers. Encourage teenagers to keep a diary where they set goals and keep track of their progress. Progress celebrations will go a long way; it doesn’t even matter if they didn’t achieve what they set out to do.

4. Encourage reflection and self-discovery –

Looking deeply towards parents is a big way to help teenagers who will figure out what they like and are good at. Get teenagers to see if there are activities where they feel satisfied and pumped. Teenagers can keep track of their thoughts by having them keep journals or write them down on a worksheet.

Another idea is to have teenagers share what they do with the rest of the class. This is a way to help them think about what they are doing and maybe give other friends some ideas too.

5. Personalise learning experiences –

Understanding every teenage child is different with unique interests and ways of learning. This will allow teenagers to become more involved in their favourite subjects. Action is needed to tailor tasks and projects to what the teenage kids like and then let them choose how they will make the task. Use digital learning aids to create a uniquely personalised learning circuit. Apps for learning will help change how teenage students experience virtual education.

6. Build a supportive environment –

Support your teenage kids to help them learn new activities. Their atmosphere should be a safe place. Let teenagers take risks with no penalty and no judgement. You should be your child’s mentor. Offer them advice, and let them know they can try new things!

Create a sense of community in your local area. Do this by talking and organising with the teenage kids around the place. Cooperate with other teenage kids, because this will help them. Celebrating their successes together, each of their successes will be celebrated!

Set up a welcoming environment demonstrating strong encouragement from everyone in and out of the learning room, parents, buddies, and family members. Enable teenagers to feel easy and relaxed so they can allow themselves to discover fresh experiences. Being able to risk and express them without a sense of embarrassment is the key to developing their future selves. Let’s guide and inspire teenage kids to explore their interests and skills. Stay with them in every step of their journey praising the good works wholeheartedly and patiently when things go wrong. At Delhi Public School Warangal, known as the best day cum boarding school in Warangal, we guide and inspire teenage students to explore their interests and skills, supporting them in every step of their journey. Have a place in your home where everyone can feel safe to share their interests, and wins, and even the lower moments. Getting involved is a big part of forming one of these supportive atmospheres and the more involved everyone is, the more everyone can get inspired by what others are doing.

To sum up, finding passions and talents for teenagers that you do could have a significant impact on those lives right now!
